Scott Barclay (Physiotherapist & Climber)
Having trained and climbed with Jon for many years I would recommend his services. His understanding of Physiology, Anatomy and climbing movement is some of the best I’ve seen. His application of this when coaching and training produces excellent results. His background in Sport Science gives him the ability to also understand the biomechanical and psychological factors involved in performance to help everyone he coaches reach their full potential.
Kate Jackson (Climber)
Jon’s coaching has really helped me to become more focused in my climbing training. Massively improving my understanding of technique and the areas I need to work on, which is making a huge difference to my skill levels. He is incredibly knowledgeable, very supportive and encouraging and great fun to work with!
Sarah Hammond (Climber)
I cannot recommend Jon highly enough as a coach. My daughter and I, who are at very different levels, have both had coaching from him and he has brought out the best in both of us. My daughter, 8 years old, desperately wanted to take part in competitions but had only just started climbing. Jon took her on to develop her technique for this, but along the way has also worked through some of the more complex mental challenges of fear and failure with her, which were really holding her back. He has tailored his methods to her, quickly establishing a relationship of trust, and is constantly looking for ways to help her improve and overcome difficulties. My daughter really likes Jon’s calm and encouraging approach, and his effective coaching is fast developing her into a more confident and more competent climber. As parents we have valued his open communication and feedback on how she is getting on. The confidence Jon has instilled in my daughter has fed in all areas of her life.
Jamie Strudwick (Climbing Holiday to Margalef)
I went on the recent climbing trip to Margalef in Spain, this was the first time that I had ever been climbing outside so I was a bit nervous about how the trip would go. I had a really great time and was surprised by how different it was, learning how to read the rock took a bit of getting used to.
The trip was tailored very well as we had wide range of different ability climbers on our trip yet we went to crags that allowed everyone to climb at a level they were comfortable at and to get tips on how to improve. While there I tried a wide range of routes from top roping some 6B and 6A to doing my first ever lead climb.
The trip helped me to think a lot more about how I climb and build on some needed skills. All the people on the trip were really friendly and the place we went had great scenery and cool climbs. I would definitely go another trip and encourage friends to who were thinking of going to do it.
Piotr Wycislik (8b & font 8A+ climber)
I have climbed and trained with Jon many years. He has been alongside me for many of my hardest routes, offering tactical and training support whenever needed. His positive and calming attitude at the crag is a regular help and I can’t recommend him enough to help improve your climbing. – First Polish Ascent of Master’s Edge
Jacqui and David Kemp (Parents and climbers)
Jon has been coaching our son Cameron and in a short period of time has made a remarkable difference to Cameron’s climbing ability. Jon has a vast knowledge of the complexities to climbing and a great ability to identify what needs to be improved and how to make that improvement. He follows a balanced structured approach that addresses the many facets to becoming a better climber. He always has the climber’s health and physical wellbeing in mind, ensuring young climbers avoid activities that could be detrimental to their development. He has a calm encouraging approach and an ability to engage young climbers in a way that gives them the drive and confidence to improve and do their best. We have had a very positive experience and highly recommend Jon. If you are looking for a friendly personable coach who provides honest constructive feedback and delivers results, Jon is the coach for you.
Ian Ash (7c Climber)
Prior to asking Jon to help support me on my journey to climbing sports 8a, I spent time hanging by the bouldering mats watching Jon coach the White Spider squad and talking to him about his views on climbing technique, strength and diet. Jon consistently impressed me with how thoughtful and considered his approach was to all these elements. In early 2016 I asked him to start working with me on a consistent basis, to push me hard and help me move past the plateau of the last few years of V7 boulder / 7c sports.
We are now +-8 weeks into working together: an hour every week training with Jon, plus my own 2-3 sessions a week based on his programme. For the first time in two years I am clearly making progress on technique and strength/endurance. For me, what separates Jon from other climbing trainers is that he is a coach in the true sense of the word: he understands his athletes, probes to find weaknesses, and finds ways to target those areas. He finds optimal workloads during our sessions and is supportive and encouraging.
